On June 23, 1983, Mayor Dianne Feinstein joined a mix of dignitaries, neighborhood folks and railfans at Castro and 17th Streets to inaugurate the first San Francisco Historic Trolley Festival.
The popularity of what was conceived as a one-summer event led to four more summer Trolley Festivals, and proved the concept that vintage streetcars in regular service could be an integral part of a major city’s transit service.
