Rare Streetcar Scenes in Upcoming Silent Movie Showing
On Sunday, July 21, 3:30 p.m. at the Castro Theater, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival is showing a restored print of “Last Edition,” filmed in San Francisco in and around the Chronicle building in 1925. There are said to be many great streetcar scenes included in the film and even a rare glimpse of the Pacific Avenue cable car, which closed in 1929.

Thirty years ago this week, the first San Francisco Historic Trolley Festival kicked off, with then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein personally piloting historic Muni Car No. 1 from 17th Street and Market to East Bay Terminal. The festival was so successful, the mayor asked that it be repeated…and the F-line rapidly progressed from a dream to full-time reality.

Maya Angelou and Market Street Railway
Something about the poet and author Dr. Maya Angelou escaped most people’s attention, until now. She was once employed by our namesake, Market Street Railway Company, Muni’s old competitor, as a streetcar conductor. The first black female conductor in San Francisco history, in fact.
