Boat tram, ‘Swiss Navy’ sailing for Fleet Week

In support of Fleet Week, SFMTA/Muni has dispatched two “vessels” to cruise The Embarcadero, shuttling happy passengers between Pier 39 and the Ferry Building. They’re supplementing regular F-line service between the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf (Jones and Jefferson) and Castro, via The Embarcadero and Market Street.

The Boat Trams are Muni’s most popular vehicles. Boat Tram 233, in its original green Blackpool, England livery, wraps up its 90th birthday regular service by operating from 10:30 am-6:00 pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday (October 11-14). You can board at any F-line stop between the Ferry Building and Pier 39. Coming south from Pier 39, the last stop is the one after the Ferry Building, right in front of our San Francisco Railway Museum, where you can learn about the history of transit in San Francisco and shop all kinds of unique transit-oriented merch! Oh, and the Boat Tram rides are FREE this weekend.

To give you a flavor of what it’s like to ride a Boat along The Embarcadero during Fleet Week, watch our video from 2021, where the Boat is captained by the late, great Mike Delia!

We all miss Mike Delia deeply. This video shows both his love of Muni and how much fun a Boat ride is.

As a bonus this year, Muni’s “Eurotram” will be joining the boat on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (October 11-13). This skinny 1951 streetcar, built for the narrow streets of Brussels, Belgium, is painted to honor San Francisco’s Sister City, Zurich, Switzerland. (Why? Because then-Mayor Gavin Newsom asked Muni nicely.) Anyway, the blue Zurich livery is striking, and appropriate for a water-themed week. And no jokes about the Swiss Navy, pleased. We have been informed that there IS one!

You can see where all the F-line cars are, including these, on our special LIVE STREETCAR MAP.
