First “Torpedo” Off to Rehab
The first of the four double-ended Muni PCC streetcars has left San Francisco for a complete rehabilitation in Pennsylvania, at Brookville Equipment Company. No. 1008, which operated in passenger service until 1982 and was then converted into a “repair car” to tow broken-down streetcars back to the barn and perform other services, left Metro East February 9. When it returns, it will be painted in the green and cream “Wings” livery in which it was originally delivered to San Francisco in 1948.

Historic PCC No. 1040 Leaves for Restoration
The last of almost 5,000 PCC-type streetcars to be built in North America is on its way to rebirth. Streetcar No. 1040, delivered to Muni new in 1952 as the final production streetcar of its kind built in the U.S., left Muni’s Metro East facility December 4 en route by truck to Pennsylvania, where it will be completely rehabilitated by Brookville Equipment Company.
First PCC Streetcar Leaves for Rehab
In this case, it needs to recover its nervous system. Streetcar No. 1071, painted in the original livery it ran in when new in Minneapolis-St. Paul in the late 1940s, left Muni’s Geneva Division today for a cross-country trip to Brookville Equipment Company in Pennsylvania where it will be completely rewired.

Muni’s latest vintage streetcar, 1946 Melbourne tram No. 916, will formally join the historic fleet Wednesday morning, October 7, at ceremony to be held in the Embarcadero median across from the San Francisco Railway Museum at 9:45 a.m.
Almost There On Streetcar Restoration
In case you didn’t tune into today’s Board of Supervisor’s Budget & Finance Committee meeting on SFGTV, which isn’t as boring as it might sound, committee reviewed the pending contract to restore 16 additional historic PCC streetcars.
